The Opportunity WSDOT Bridge & Structures Office, Structural Design Unit is currently seeking to fill a Bridge Engineer 7 Seismic and Foundation Specialist position in Tumwater, WA. This position is relied upon for expert-level knowledge in substructure and seismic design practices. In addition, the person in this position will maintain and update office practices regarding substructure/seismic design through regular updates to the WSDOT Bridge Design Manual and provide training and supervision to less-experienced Engineers. The BE7 Seismic and Foundation Specialist will also perform as a Senior Structural Designer/Project Coordinator on major projects in the Design Group and will be assigned highly specialized design assignments as directed. This position will serve as the designated technical specialist in the field of substructure and seismic design as related to bridge and structural engineering. This position is the main resource for WSDOT and other governmental agencies in the field of its specialty. What to Expect WSDOT is known for its bridge design and bridge inspection technical expertise. Our professional staff are motivated and trained to design optimum solutions for complex and challenging projects, and also to preserve our large and valuable inventory of existing bridges and structures. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Engineer 7 will: Serve as a Senior Structural Designer or Bridge Design Coordinator on major projects. Provide complex structural design work for major projects. Review structural design work completed by less-experienced Engineers. Track overall Project progress for conformance to schedules. Coordinate with Region engineering staff for successful project completion. Review AASHTO specifications and provide expert interpretation of design criteria, procedures and specifications. Review new criteria, procedures, and specifications for emerging technology for adoption by WSDOT. Network with statewide, national, and international experts and represent WSDOT in dealing with other organizations, such as institutions, consultants, other governmental agencies, universities, researchers, and industry. Directly supervise up to four Structural Detailers, providing mentoring and guidance. Provide substructure and seismic design and analysis technical support to other Engineers within the Bridge Office, and, when required, to other divisions within WSDOT, other governmental agencies, and consultants. Act as Bridge Technical Advisor (BTA) in the support of Region construction projects. Provide and/or plan design reviews for challenging or unusual substructure or seismic designs. Initiate, prepare reviews, and coordinate updates and revisions to the WSDOT Bridge Design Manual and Standard Specifications. Qualifications To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required: Bachelor’s of Science, Masters, or PhD in Civil/Structural Engineering. Registration in Washington State as a Structural Engineer. At least two (2) years of work experience as a Bridge Engineer 5 or 6, or equivalent. Possession of expert-level knowledge in the field of Specialty. Expert-level knowledge must include conducting Push-Over analysis to determine seismic displacement capacity. At least four (4) years of experience designing bridge substructures in high seismic regions. Ability to communicate complex structural issues in simple, understandable language, both verbally and in writing. Ability to act as a Team Leader. Thorough familiarity and proficiency with software analysis, design and detailing tools used in the Office; CSI Bridge, PG Super, LPile, Bridge Link software package, GTStrudl, etc. It is preferred that qualified candidates also have: Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel. Working knowledge of CAD software used in the WSDOT Bridge Office (MicroGDS or MicroStation). Experience in design build, design bid build, and other alternative project delivery methods.
